Rio Bravo is in one of the poorest regions in Central America. Due to terrible social and environmental issues, children are literally dying of malnutrition. Contaminated water supplies are poisoning the children. Many children are on the street, parentless and homeless. There is a destructive cycle of illiteracy, fatherlessness, teen pregnancy, incest and alcoholism. The situation is dire.
Thankfully, local community leaders and volunteers have decided to make a difference. Each day, 350 of the poorest children in Rio Bravo gather at a church to eat a nutritious breakfast, prepared and served by faithful volunteers. The breakfast usually consists of eggs, tortillas and frijoles (beans). On occasion, fresh fruit and dairy products are provided. For most of the children, this is their only meal of the day.
The results of this feeding program are obvious. Since its inception in 2008, the overall health of these children has changed dramatically. The children are now able to attend school and focus on their work. Their outlook on the future is changing. We have personally witnessed the transformation in the lives of many children. We have also seen many of these children receive new clothes and shoes which make their lives easier.
In 2012 IOS helped fund a micro-economic project, a chicken farm to provide meat and eggs for the feeding center and also to sell these products to the community. Currently three local men have been employed as a result of the project with plans to expand. Your generosity is making a difference.
